This journal has been indexed as a Scientific-Research journal according to the no. 3/7135 letter from the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. The journal was initially entitled "Forest and Poplar Research", which was changed to "Iranian Journal of Forest and Poplar Research" from the 4th volume onwards.

The initial idea of publishing a journal about the results of the internal researches and studies on forest and fast-growing species raised on 1998 in the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands (RIFR). It was aimed to introduce the results of such studies for foresters, researchers, students as well as teachers in the region; Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and some parts of Miner Asia, that  are familiar with Farsi (Persian) language.
